The Kenworth W900, a.k.a. the "The War Rig," is a custom vehicle driven by Praetorian Jack and Praetorian Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It is a prototype of the War Rig seen in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Technical Specs[]
The War Rig has 615 horsepower and 2050 lb-ft of torque. It is built from older cars and contains a lot of weaponry, including most notably a large, spinning drill with four maces attached.[1] called the "bommy knocker". The War Rig is also equipped with 2 excavators located on frame to attack vehicles. The War Rig is stated in the movie to be powered by 2 V8 engines, with the second engine which is able to be started independently of the first engine to provide more power when needed. The Rig hauls a large fuel tanker decorated with a mural that can carry both liquid cargo and solid cargo like ammunition or food. After the War Rigs first run into Gas Town it is upgraded with a 2nd tanker with the original tanker being moved to the rear.
The "Bommy Knocker"[]
The so-called "bommy knocker" was a large drill at the rear end of the War Rig's tanker. There was a compartment situated just above this medieval-looking weapon where a special War Pup -- portrayed by Quaden Bayles -- stood guard to activate the deadly device should it be needed.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga[]
In the prequel film's third chapter "The Stowaway" we see the War Rig constructed in a special place inside The Citadel referred to as the "House of Holy Motors." The construction sequence is shown as a rapid montage. On the side of the rig is intricate bas-relief, depicting Immortan Joe leading men to war with vehicles. Also, unlike the War Rig from Fury Road, the driver's side is on the right.
On its first run after completion (that we see) the rig is attacked by the Octoboss and his crew of "Mortiflyers" as Praetorian Jack refers to them. He explains that they've "gone rogue" from Dementus. An epic road war ensues in which everyone on both sides is wiped-out -- to include the Octoboss when Furiosa fires up the "bommy knocker" -- save, Furiosa and Praetorian Jack. However, Furiosa makes a foolish play for the War Rig by turning on Jack and is easily thrown out of the rig.
Furiosa sees her plans completely quashed as she was planning on taking a bike out into the Wasteland to search for the Green Place. She's surprised when Praetorian Jack returns for her telling her, "You may be raw but you have about you a purposeful savagery." He goes on to promise that if she joins him as part of his next crew, he will teach her everything she needs to go wherever she wants to go.
Some time has passed before we start the fourth chapter "Homeward." Furiosa is a Praetorian, riding shotgun next to Jack. Jack tells her that she's ready and that he'll help her put everything she needs together for her journey.
During their runs things start to get hairy a there is growing distrust of Dementus and his ability to lead. Then, at Gastown, they discover that the fortress is in chaos and about to fall. They barely escape and its with their tanks empty of fuel. When they return to The Citadel and report this to Immortan Joe he orders them to go to the Bullet farm and fill up with every type of ordnance they can. However, when they get to the Bullet Farm it has been seized by Dementus and they're ambushed. During the ambush, Furiosa and Jack make it out alive, but the first War Rig is lost, after causing heavy damage to the Bullet Farm.
Behind the Scenes[]
The sequence in Furiosa in which the War Rig is attacked is known as the "Stowaway to Nowhere" sequence. The sequence was filmed for 78 days over the course of nine months and involved over 100 stunt performers.[2]
