– Furiosa, regarding Mary - Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | ||
Mary Jabassa is a character in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. She is the mother of Furiosa and leader of the Green Place, though she considers herself an equal to the villagers there.[1] She is both a mother and a warrior.[2]
Biography[]
Mary Jabassa was one of the Vuvalini, the Leader of the Tribe, and mother to Furiosa.
Mary Jabassa and Vuvalini General give chase.
Upon hearing a distress call sounded by her daughter, and shouts from Valkyrie, she pursued four intruders on horseback with a character dubbed "Vuvalini General" and later on motorcycles across the wasteland to retrieve her child. However, she was unable to kill all of them before they brought Furiosa to the warlord named "Dementus."
Mary and young Furiousa would briefly unite after she rescued her from the camp of her kidnappers, but they would be pursued by several riders afterwards, Dementus among them. Deciding she was outnumbered, Mary instructed Furiosa to return home on the motorcycle she had acquired while she held off the intruders. She was able to kill several of them before she was captured and tortured to death.
Unfortunately, Furiosa defied her mother's last wishes and went back for her mother instead. There, she was forced by Dementus to watch her die at the hands of the Octoboss. She was later raised for a brief time by the crazed Warlord as his surrogate daughter.[3]
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga[]
Mary Jabassa appears in Chapter I of the film entitled "The Pole of Inaccessibility." This chapter shows how Furiosa was abducted from the Green Place by Toe Jam and four of his cohorts. The group of bandits was in the Green Place — a sort of oasis tucked amongst some rocky outcroppings — where they were killing a horse for its meat as Furiosa and Valkyrie happened upon them.
Furiosa was quickly discovered and started blowing a whistle to signal for help. She and Valkyrie also called out. This startled Toe Jam and his crew and they quickly jumped on their motor bikes to beat a hasty retreat. But it was too late -- Mary Jabassa jumped on a horse with a Vuvalini General in hot pursuit. Once she reached the peak of a hill the General hopped-off and started sniping, killing one of the bikers. Mary then commandeered his bike and continued to pursue, eventually killing another biker with a machete. Then she "upgraded" her bike to another that Toe Jam and his partner had stripped.
Mary, eventually, tracked Toe Jam all the way back to Dementus' hovel as a sand storm blew across the Wasteland. She killed a horde member and disguised herself in his gear before quickly infiltrating the encampment, whilst executing several of Dementus' men, including two special ones who were charged by Dementus to safeguard Furiosa from any "brutes." Inside the tent, Mary confronted a woman who was there to clean Furiosa. Mary was going to kill this woman, but she threw her arms in the air, cowering like a frightened wretch in claiming to be a mother as well. This was enough to convince Mary not to kill her, instead, Mary fled with Furiosa. However, the woman, despite her promise not to sound an alarm, immediately informed Dementus of the escape.
The woman ran to Dementus tent where he was with his lieutenants and told them to fire at the fleeing pair. Fang then fired a shot which struck the gas tank on the back of the fleeing bike, causing a brilliant explosion that set Mary ablaze. They stopped so that Mary could put out the flames. They wouldn't go out, so she quickly stripped-off the disguise. But Furiosa saw that her back was burnt badly. Still, Mary and Furiosa continued to escape. They continued to flee until Mary realized that they wouldn't get away together; Furiosa's only chance at survival was to go alone while Mary delayed them.
Mary gave Furiosa a peach seed and made her promise, as a "gift", to go back, to find the Green Place, no matter what. Then Mary put Furiosa on the bike and sent her off. As the girl rode away, Mary continued to fight by shooting several more thugs until she ran out of ammo. Then she fought some more using the rifle as a club. But she was quickly overpowered.
Dementus and his Biker Horde brought Mary Jabassa back to a clearing where they strapped her hands and bare feet to some thick, wooden branches or logs roughly designed like a crucifix with a fire lit under her. Furiosa, unable to leave her mother behind, went back, despite her promise and Dementus made Furiosa watch as Octoboss is implied to cut into Mary Jabassa’s abdomen to torture her. She screams in agony and tortured Mary Jabassa to death.
Trivia[]
- Although the character is referred to as being Furiosa's mother in Furiosa, the film never answers the question of whether she is her biological mother, her adoptive mother, or if it is simply an honorific from her being part of the Vuvalini (The Many Mothers).[4]
- In an interview regarding the character, actress Charlee Fraser stated that there were three defining things she had to explore to find her: that she is a leader, she is a mother, and she is a warrior.[1]
- The character's name was originally given as "Mary Jo Bassa" on the deluxe edition of the soundtrack for Mad Max: Fury Road before being finalized as Mary Jabassa for the Furiosa film.[5]
