The Mad Max Wiki

Pappagallo's tribe consisted of several benevolent families that lived in the Oil Refinery in the Outback.

Biography[]

Little is known of their lives and intentions other than their desire to leave the marauding wastes on an exodus to the coast.

When Max Rockatansky happens upon them, they are besieged by Lord Humungus and his crazed (and desperate) horde of Marauders. The "tribe" or "clan" of loosely associated groups is led by Pappagallo.

Max's introduction to them is based on a business transaction -- he would save Nathan, whom was just ambushed and severely wounded by the marauders in exchange for all the guzzolene he could carry. However, there was one problem with the deal a it was contingent on Max getting Nathan back to the compound alive. This didn't happen and Max's deal died with Nathan.

A short time later, the tribe, increasingly desperate from Humungus' constant pressure, want to make a run for it. Their only real solution is to trust Max to help them by retrieving a truck capable of hauling a tanker. Deal back on, Max makes for the hauler and returns as planned, by and large, save some bullet holes and other damage.

1981 MM2 TRW - OIL TANKER

Once the tanker hauler is repaired, the tribe formulates a plan for escape, along with Max who has returned after being ambushed by the marauders. Max volunteers to drive the tanker with a small contingent of the compound's inhabitants -- to include Warrior Woman, Pappagallo, the Mechanic, and a few others -- to act as escort-defenders. The tanker team engages Lord Humungus, Wez, and the Marauders in a vicious and bloody road war that wipes out nearly everyone, save Max, Feral Kid, and some assorted marauders, whilst the rest of the tribe head in the opposite direction fully loaded with fuel.

Following their escape from Lord Humungous' marauders, they go to a ghost town in northern Australia which had once been a popular seaside resort. Our Narrator, an adult-version of the Feral Kid, tell us that they repopulated the deserted resort and became known as the "Great Northern Tribe."

Appearance As Symbolism[]

Appearance symbolism is ancient concept in narrative story-telling. There have been numerous tales of the Black Knight, and Cowboys who wore white hats as a symbol of good, such as the Lone Ranger, and his archenemy, Butch Cavendish, who wore black. The Mad Max Saga is no different in that appearance is a form of symbolism or non-verbal communication.

Lord Humungus and his Marauders are no doubt the "bad guys" of Mad Max 2 with their black and spikes and punk look. They are obviously meant to be the polar opposites of their enemies in the compound who are clearly distinguished by their light, white colours made of animal skins and plastic.
