“ | You're scum, Dementus! SCUM! | ” |
– Octoboss |
The Octoboss is a character featured in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. He was played by Goran D. Kleut.
Biography[]
The Octoboss, as his name implies, is an under-boss of Dementus. He leads a small contingent of men in his charge known as the "Mortiflyers," parachutists and paragliders who trail the motorcycles.
The Octoboss rides a motorcycle with a large fan attached to the back. He also wears a demonic-looking, black helmet with large horns that not only covers his face from the dirt and dust of the Wasteland, but also acts as an intimidation factor when he attacks.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga[]
In Chapter I, after Mary Jabassa fails to rescue Furiosa, they are captured by Dementus and his Biker Horde. It is the Octoboss who tortures Mary Jabassa to death as Dementus makes young Furiosa watch.
A while later, Dementus decides that he wants to seize Gastown. Hence, he leads his Biker Horde on an attack of a fuel tanker. The horde easily overtakes the tanker, but that is only Step One.
Dementus grabs some white mud as well as a random horde member. The rando is displeased by Dementus' singling him out and ordering him around, refusing to obey. Octoboss, perturbed, reluctantly orders his man to obey. Then the rando acquiesces to Dementus, strips down, and starts to cover himself with mud in order to look like a War Boy. Understanding what Dementus's intentions are, Octoboss says, "Who wants to be a War Boy?"
A short time later, Dementus and his Biker Horde chase the tanker, covered with fake War Boys, back to Gastown as a ruse. However, the guards of Gastown are unsure what to do and call the "Guardian of Gastown," who is Immortan Joe's brother. The Guardian doesn't buy the ruse, ordering his men not to open the gates. Dementus quickly senses this failure. His solution, then, is to make the ruse seem more real and he orders his horde to start attacking the tanker for real, as in killing the fake War Boys aboard. This is a dagger that slices a rift between Dementus and Octoboss as the latter rides up to Dementus and says, "You're scum, Dementus! SCUM!" But the ruse works. The guards open the gates of Gastown and Dementus' crew, including Fang and Mr. Norton, disembark from the rig, like a Trojan Horse, and easily take the fortress.
The Rift[]
As some time passes, we learn that some men, led by Octoboss have revolted against Dementus and "gone rogue." This was no doubt caused by the callous way in which Dementus killed men under the Octoboss' charge.
A desperate Octoboss leads an attack on the War Rig, driven by Praetorian Jack, with an array of motorcycles that have parachute-rigs, which Praetorian Jack refers to as "Mortiflyers," that allow them to attack from the sky. The assault is very effective in wiping-out nearly everyone aboard the War Rig, except for Praetorian Jack, and Furiosa, who snuck aboard as a stowaway.
The Octoboss is one of the last attackers to attempt to capture the rig. He flies in on a long, black parachute with many tails, hence octopus, and is killed by the "bommy knocker," a rotor with four swinging maces attached. Ultimately, Octoboss and his small crew of rogues is completely wiped-out in the road war.
Behind the Scenes[]
The Octoboss was originally slated to appear on an actual flying motorcycle, but this was ultimately vetoed by director George Miller for safety reasons. As explained by Colin Gibson, production designer for Furiosa, "George being the caring and loving man that he is, has a bit of a bent against flying things for real."[1]
